Preparation rule: For best results, defrost food in the refrigerator before use. Never submerge food or its packaging in water to defrost or reheat it. Some products give better results cooked from frozen; use that method only where the product’s instructions state it.
Check whether your soup’s pack permits the stove, microwave or both before choosing a method. Packaging instructions matter as much as appliance choice: transfer the soup when directed. If you are making soup the centre of dinner, check its serving size and add a suitable accompaniment rather than assuming every soup is a complete meal.
Pumpkin and potato & leek soups
The current Pumpkin Soup and Potato & Leek Soup instructions provide both stove and microwave methods. Confirm that your pack matches these directions before heating.
- Stovetop, defrosted: pour into a pot and heat gently on low for 7–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until piping hot.
- Microwave: the current pouch instructions say to snip the top corner, then heat for four minutes when defrosted or seven minutes when frozen, until hot. These pouch directions are specific to those packs; do not apply them to another container.
Roasted vegetable soups: bowl or saucepan
For Roasted Cauliflower and Comté Soup, Carrot Ginger and Brown Butter Soup and Roasted Tomato and Red Pepper Soup, the detailed preparation instructions include these methods after fully defrosting in the refrigerator:
- Stovetop: pour into a saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally until heated through and gently simmering; do not boil.
- Microwave: remove from the packaging into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat on HIGH for 3–4 minutes, stirring halfway through. Continue if required until piping hot throughout, then stand for one minute.
The detailed cauliflower and Comté instructions now include a microwave method, so the old story’s blanket “stove only” statement has been removed. The latest packaging remains your reference for the product you received.
Choose the stated heating method
Use the container and method specified for your soup. A bowl-transfer instruction does not mean the original packaging is microwave-safe. Stir at the stated points and check the whole portion is hot before serving.
Serve with the right accompaniment
Check serving sizes before using soup as a starter or main. Add bread or another accompaniment of your choice and review allergens for the whole meal. Potato and leek soup contains chicken broth; a vegetable in the name does not make a soup vegetarian.
