How to Reheat Frozen Meals Properly - Providoor

How to Reheat Frozen Meals: A Dish-by-Dish Guide

Author Providoor Editorial Team

Preparation rule: For best results, defrost food in the refrigerator before use. Never submerge food or its packaging in water to defrost or reheat it. Some products give better results cooked from frozen; use that method only where the product’s instructions state it.

There is no single reheating method for every frozen meal. Some products need thawing first; others have instructions for cooking from frozen. Check your product’s sleeve for its preparation method, appliance and packaging instructions. Then use the dish guides below for serving tips, keeping the product instructions as the final reference.

Start with the instructions on your pack

Identify the exact product and its pack size. Check whether it needs refrigerated defrosting, has a from-frozen method, or needs cooking rather than reheating. Read the steps before starting, including film removal, container changes, stirring and standing time.

Match the dish to its own method

The lasagne guide distinguishes the two current lasagnes and their different oven stages. The lamb guide separates shoulder, shanks and kofta. The curry guide covers the seafood cooking step as well as chicken curry methods. The soup guide explains which packs use a pouch and which require a microwave-safe bowl.

Identify your packaging

  • CPET tray: microwave- or oven-safe packaging used for most curries and wet dishes. Follow the specific food instructions for temperature, film handling and cooking method.
  • 120µm vacuum pouch: used for most proteins. Remove the pouch and transfer the food as the product instructions direct.
  • 120µm sealed nick-tear pouch: used for soups and sauces. Follow the product instructions for opening and transferring the contents to a saucepan or microwave-safe container.

Never submerge any of these packs in water to defrost or reheat food. Pouch thickness alone does not establish suitability for an oven or microwave.

An oven-safe tray is not a cooking instruction

CPET tray compatibility describes the container. It does not provide the cooking method for every dish inside it, or establish that a lid or film should remain on. Use the complete preparation directions for your particular meal.

Plan thawing and serving time

Where thawing is required, plan refrigerated thawing before your intended meal. Do not assume every product defrosts overnight or that every dish should be defrosted at all: Chunky Choc Chip Cookies are baked from frozen. Use pack guidance for storage after thawing and do not substitute a general two-day rule.

Allow for multi-stage cooking

The Slow Roasted Porchetta has two oven stages and a rest. Its detailed instructions specify 25–35 minutes at 220°C (200°C fan-forced), then 30–45 minutes at 160°C, with a core temperature above 75°C, followed by 10–15 minutes resting. Read the full product instructions for preparation and any optional finishing stage. A short category timing is not the total time.

Coordinate mains, sides and dessert

Check oven space and temperatures if preparing several dishes. Aromatic Rice, Potato Gratin and desserts each need their own method. Do not blanket-cover every dish with foil or use one microwave power setting for the whole menu.

When the delivery arrives

Check the order and follow the storage directions promptly. If you are concerned about the condition of a delivery, contact Providoor with the order details rather than relying on a general statement that softened food will be safe for several days.

Common questions

Do all frozen meals need defrosting?

No. Some instructions start with refrigerated defrosting and others include cooking from frozen. Check the exact pack.

Does the method change by city?

The product instructions remain the same. Delivery coverage, dates and charges depend on your address.

Can I refreeze a meal?

Follow that product’s storage instructions. Do not assume all products can be refrozen or apply a single shelf-life rule across the menu.

Which guide should I use?

Choose the dish-specific guide above, then keep the latest packaging as your final reference.

It appears that your voucher belongs to the old Providoor, which, unfortunately, is not us. :(

We understand how much the original Providoor meant to many Australians, especially during the challenging times of COVID. It provided a way to enjoy high-quality meals from beloved restaurants in the comfort of your home. We also understand that some of you may still hold vouchers from the previous iteration of Providoor, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

When the original Providoor, unfortunately, went into administration, we made the decision to purchase the brand because we recognised its significance to so many Australians. Providoor was more than just a business; it was a source of comfort, connection, and joy during tough times. However, while we have revived and rebranded Providoor to focus on delivering gourmet frozen meals from celebrity chefs, we are a completely new company with a different business model and operations.

This means that we do not have any obligation to honour the vouchers issued by the previous company, as those financial liabilities were not transferred to us during the acquisition. We know this may be disappointing news, but please understand that we are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for our valued customers.

Thank you again for your understanding and for being a part of Providoor’s journey. We are committed to providing you with the highest quality gourmet experiences, and we look forward to serving you in the future.

Warm regards,
The Providoor Team
